Cabinets

Melamine

Melamine starts with a plywood core which is then covered with a resin and paper finish that can be manufactured to various styles and colours. Melamine cabinets are resistant to many of the common issues presented in a kitchen because of its tough outer coating.
Advantages
  1. More affordable than other materials
  2. Wide variety of finishes including faux wood grains in various shades and solid colours
  3. Easy to clean
Disadvantages
  1. Susceptible to water damage
  2. Door style limited to slab
  3. Difficult to retouch if scratched
Melamine

Thermoplastic

Thermoplastic greatly resembles natural wood. The doors are first made of high-quality MDF panels, then covered with thermo-fused PVC.
Advantages
  1. A wide selection of door styles and colours
  2. More affordable than wood
  3. Easy to achieve a high-gloss finish
  4. Easy to maintain
Disadvantages
  1. Not recommended in very humid environments
  2. Cannot be retouched if scratched
Termofoil

Solid Wood

Available in several species such as birch, oak, ash, cherry, maple or pine, it can be dyed in an infinite number of colours or simply varnished. It is commonly used for cabinet fronts, counters, molding, corbels, and edges.
Advantages
  1. Strength and durability
  2. Choice of a wide variety of colours
  3. A wide selection of door styles
  4. Can be varnished or dyed multiple times
  5. Scratches are easy to repair
Disadvantages
  1. Expensive
  2. Can be damaged by moisture
  3. May produce warping and cracking noises
  4. Gets deformed with time and use
Hardwood

Countertops

Laminate

Laminate countertops are made from layers of plastic that are bonded to particleboard or kraft paper to create a solid countertop surface. These countertops are available in a wide variety of colors, textures, and patterns, ranging from options that look like marble to ones that mirror the appearance of stainless steel.
Advantages
  1. Affordable
  2. Available in a wide variety of colours and styles
  3. Durable to withstand everyday use
Disadvantages
  1. Not as durable as natural stone
  2. Not heat resistant
  3. Can be difficult to clean
Laminate

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

Quartz is created through a manufacturing process that mixes approximately 95 percent ground natural quartz with 5 percent polymer resins.
Advantages
  1. Low maintenance
  2. Doesn’t need to be sealed
  3. Heat & scratch proof
  4. Easy to customize
Disadvantages
  1. Can chip
  2. May show visible seams where pieces meet
Quartz

Marble

Marble is a type of metamorphic rock that is known for its beauty. While there is no denying the exquisite nature of marble, it is one of the stones that require extensive care and the application of sealant.
Advantages
  1. Looks luxurious
  2. Available in a wide variety of colours
Disadvantages
  1. Expensive
  2. Soft and porous meaning – scratches and stains easily

Granite

Granite is a natural stone defined as a crystalline, granular rock consisting of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
Advantages
  1. Requires very little maintenance
  2. Stain, heat and water-resistant when sealed
Disadvantages
  1. Very heavy and needs to be well supported
  2. Can chip or crack if the material is too thin
  3. Final colours can differ from samples

Butcher's Block

Butcher’s block is a style of assembled wood (often hard maple, teak, birch, or walnut) used as heavy-duty chopping blocks, tabletops, and cutting boards. It was commonly used in butcher shops and meat processing plants but has now become widespread in-home use.

Disadvantages
  1. Not very heat or water-resistant
  2. Marks easily
  3. Requires regular maintenance
